How to Play DOOM in Your Browser (No Download)
A step-by-step guide to playing the original 1993 DOOM in any desktop browser using WebAssembly - controls, saves, tips, and what makes it the real engine.
Playing DOOM in a browser used to mean compromise: slow Java applets, inaccurate remakes, or sketchy downloads. Today the original engine compiles to WebAssembly, which means the 1993 source code itself runs at near-native speed inside a browser tab. Here is how to get shooting in under a minute.
Step 1: Open the game
Head to the DOOM Online homepage and click PLAY in the game frame. The first click does two jobs: it starts the engine and satisfies the browser's audio policy, so you get sound from the first shot.
Step 2: Wait for the first load
The game downloads about 4 MB of data on the first visit: the WebAssembly engine (~300 KB) and the shareware episode WAD file. After that, your browser caches everything - the next visit starts in seconds.
Step 3: Learn the controls
- Arrows / WASD - move (hold Shift to run)
- Ctrl / Space / mouse click - fire
- E / Enter - use doors and switches
- 1-7 - switch weapons
- Tab - overlay map
- Esc - in-game menu (save, load, options)
Click inside the game area to capture the mouse for aiming; press Esc to release it back to the page.
Step 4: Save your run
Open the menu with Esc and use Save Game. Saves live in your browser's storage on this site, so you can close the tab and continue later from the same browser. Starting a different browser or clearing site data begins a fresh save slot.
Why it feels exactly like 1993
Because it is 1993. The port compiles the original engine source - game logic, physics, movement speed, even the movement bugs speedrunners love - unchanged. Only the rendering and audio output were redirected to browser APIs. When a shotgun feels heavy and a zombieman drops in two pellets, that is the original tuned code, not an approximation.
Troubleshooting
- Black screen? Reload the page and click PLAY again; a dropped connection during the first load is the usual cause.
- No sound? Make sure you clicked PLAY (not just loaded the page) - browsers require a click before audio.
- Mobile? The game needs a physical keyboard. Play on a desktop or laptop.
