The free shareware episode of DOOM - Knee-Deep in the Dead - is nine levels of 1993 level design that still teaches modern shooters how pacing works. If you are new, these tips will keep you alive past the first couple of levels.

1. Keep moving

DOOM is not a cover shooter. Enemies lead their shots, and standing still makes you a free kill. Strafe constantly - circle around imps while they wind up fireballs.

2. Learn the shotgun rhythm

The pump shotgun carries eight shells. Fire, count the pump, and swap to your pistol when caught reloading mid-fight. At close range one shot plus a punch finishes most early enemies.

3. Open every wall that looks wrong

Secret walls show subtle misalignment: a texture offset, a brighter tile, a wall that is not symmetrical. Episode 1 hides armor, weapons and health behind them - the rocket launcher on E1M3 alone is worth the search.

4. Use the map

Press Tab for the overlay map. Grey lines are walls; red doors need keys. Check it whenever a level feels like a maze - every DOOM map has a logic you can read.

5. Save before big rooms

Quick-save (Esc, Save Game) before opening large doors. DOOM's ambushes - lights dropping, walls opening behind you - are famous for a reason.

6. Prioritize hitscan enemies

Zombiemen and shotgun guys hit instantly when they fire. Demons and imps telegraph. Kill the shooters first, then dance around the melee.

7. Grab the armor early

Green armor (100) at the start of a level effectively doubles your survivability. The one behind the start of E1M1's secret area has saved more runs than any weapon.

8. Do not waste rockets on single enemies

Save rockets for packs and barons. Plasma and rockets go fast when you spam them.

9. Listen

DOOM's audio is information: imp growls, demon snorts, elevator hums. Headphones make the game measurably easier.

10. Play it where it runs best

A browser that supports WebAssembly well (any current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) gives you smooth 35 FPS classic pacing with crisp audio. The engine is the original code - so every trick from 1993, including speedrun techniques, works here too.
